How to Use Project Templates

How to Create Project Templates. What are Project Templates?

Project Templates allow you to create a Template of a Project to use to easily set up new Projects with pre-determined attributes. Project Templates are a feature of the Advanced Plan; if you are on the Professional Plan and would like to talk to us about switching to the Advanced Plan, please reach out to Support and we'll be happy to help.

You can either create a Project Template from scratch, or from using an existing Project.

Creating a Project Template from Scratch

To create a Project Template from scratch, navigate to your Settings, choose "Templates", select the "Projects" tab, and then click the "+ Add New" button:

This will take you through a workflow that is essentially the same as creating a new Project, only when you are done you will have created a Template:

You can fill this data out as much as you would a normal Project, including adding Items, assigning Contacts, and configuring financial details. You can even add an Item Template to your Project Template, the same way you would add Items from an Item Template to an active Project (please see this article on Item Templates). You cannot pre-track time on a Template, or pre-add messages.

The Templates page in your Settings is also where you can edit existing Project Templates. Just click on the name of any Template on the list to open it up and edit the Template the same way that you would edit a Project.

Creating a Project Template from an Existing Project

To create a Project Template from an existing Project, navigate to the Project Details page of the Project that you wish to create a Template from. Then, click the ellipsis in the top right corner of the page, and select "Save as Template":

This brings up a module that allows you to name the Template, set a client, choose the appropriate Date settings, and choose whether to include the Items and Tags on the Project:

Once you hit "Save" your template is created and you can continue to modify it further if you wish:

Again, please note that you cannot pre-track time on a Template, or pre-add messages. Additionally, Items which were in a "Completed" state on your original Project will not be pre-completed on the Template.

Creating a Project from a Template

Once you have your Project Templates configured, to create a Project from a Template, choose "Load Template" on the Add Project screen, then select the Template you wish to use:

Once you hit "Create" on the Add Project screen, your Project will be created using the Template you have chosen. Again, please note that this will not include any pre-tracked time, or messages.
